They burst in our life in the last decade of the previous century and very soon became the fastest-selling style of women underwear. Being extremely popular among large groups of young and middle-aged people (both men and women), THONG or G-STRING is still surrounded by many controversies.

Actually I think they can deservedly be called the most CONTROVERSIAL article of clothing. Let’s see what is so curious about thongs what makes people talk about them so much!

1. Despite the fact that we got aware of thongs or g-strings in 80s-90s only, they are probably the earliest form of clothing known to mankind!!! African tribal peoples and Japanese fundoshi wore thongs as their only garment as long as 2000 years ago.

2. In Western cultures thongs are primarily female underwear style. And although today more and more men start wearing thongs, women wearing thongs still heavily outnumber their boyfriends. But originally, by primitive peoples thongs were cut for the male anatomy!

3. Modern thongs have first appeared in Brazil and it is not accidentally because in Brazil the buttocks are especially admired and emphasized!

4. Minimalism is an explicit tendency of the 21st century and underwear of young people gets so small that it is difficult to imagine it can be something even smaller. Thongs and G-strings have received much criticism for its revealing and sexually provoking nature, but now there is something even more controversial!C-string is a thong without the band around the waist!It is held by a flexible internal frame. It was designed to help women eliminate all possible panty and tan lines! See at the picture on the right.

5. Pop culture welcomed thongs and their positive attitude is heard in their songs. Artists composing songs about thongs include Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Lil’ Kim. One song that popularized thongs was the “Thong Song” by Sisqó, released in 2000.

6. Some people think that thong is a too revealing and provoking undergarment for wearing it in the beach. Tat is why some countries and municipal governments in the United States have passed legislation forbidding G-string swimsuits in public! The University of California 4-H and Virginia FCCLA program specifically forbids “string, thong or crochet” swimsuits for women, while men are permitted in swim trunks only (no shorts, cut-off pants, or Speedos).

7. Besides, that is not a rare case, when thongs bring people to Court. In 1999 a Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio) professor was banned from using the school’s recreation center because he refused to stop wearing thong swimwear. The professor challenged the school in court. Read more

8. We all still remember Monica Lewinsky and her thong, that reportedly almost seduced President Clinton.

9.In 2002 thongs became the reason for a high school vice principal in San Diego being demoted to a teaching position.The lady physically checked up to 100 female students’ underwear to prevent them entering the school wearing thongs. Read more.

10. Manufacturers who produce child thongs are widely criticized by the public. The example can be a British retailer Argos who produced child-size thongs and padded bras for girls as young as nine and elicited a negative response from the public.
