Plus- size Shopping: Some Tips

July 5th, 2006

1. Shop often.

2. Scour the stores on your regular shopping route- and try new ones.

3. Check out the men’s department; sometimes you can find adorable white shirts with French cuffs there.

4. If you like a certain style and it fits, consider buying the same item in several colors. It’s fine to have the same pants in black, khaki and white.

5. If you find something really great, don’t wait for it to go on sale.

Plus-size: What is It?

July 5th, 2006

plus- size.bmpWell…

Typically, plus sizes are size 14 and up.

But there is more- and it can get confusing.

Regular sizes are called misses sizes. Some of those do indeed come in 14 and 16; those aren’t true plus sizes.

Plus sizes are also called women’s sizes, which is why you find stores with names such as Talbots Woman or Dress Barn Woman. Often- though not always- the tags of plus-size clothes have a W, as in 14W or 16W. Sometimes plus-size clothes are labeled size X, 1X, 2X, 3X and beyond.

Plus-size clothes are cut larger than their misses counterparts. According to Talbots, which sells plus sizes up to 24W and 3X as well as misses sizes up to 20 and XL, plus sizes have more room in the waist and hips. They’re constructed to allow more room for arms, legs, tummies and a larger- and lower- bustline. Sometimes plus sizes have elastic in the waistband.

It`s high time to ask some questions:

Why is it so difficult to shop?

And when will it get easier?

Don`t worry! Help is on the way.

Discounters, department stores and specialty shops say they are updating their plus-size offerings!

The plus- or large-size clothing business is now a $32 billion industry. It’s grown so much fat in the past five years that revenues have jumped 50 percent.

It`s an evident fact that society keeps getting bigger and bigger (62 percent of American women are now overweight according to health statistics).

This season, Lands’ End is showing off its most extensive collection ever of plus-size sportswear, and Old Navy now sells plus sizes in select stores. T.J. Maxx has added more plus-size clothing to its racks.

One of the most ambitious plans is under way at Lane Bryant. The nation’s largest plus-size retailer (it has 750 stores across the country) has added premium (and very expensive) denim to its lineup of jeans…
